About Us
The Centre for Innovation, Intellectual Property and Competition (CIIPC) was set up in 2015 with the aim of supporting academic and policy-oriented dialogue in the individual and intersectional areas of innovation, intellectual property (IP), and competition. Since its inception, it has been engaged in intensive and extensive research on important contemporary issues in these areas. While some of its research projects focus on inquiries into niche areas, some others focus on unique questions relating to heavily discussed areas. The strength of this centre lies in its emphasis on empirical and interdisciplinary approaches to research which ensure holistic insights into its focal areas.
The projects undertaken by CIIPC delve into diverse areas such as open science, open innovation, the interrelationship and interactions between IP and startups, the interface of patents and competition law, and working requirements of patents. Moreover, the centre is in the process of developing comprehensive and high-quality open access textbooks on IP and competition laws.
Role and Objectives
The Centre intends to fuel academic and policy-oriented dialogues in vital areas of innovation, IP and competition. Although the focus of the Centre is largely on science and technology related issues, it will also contribute to research in different non-technology driven areas like trademarks and geographical indications. The role of the CIIPC is essentially focussed on the following four-pronged objectives
Funding
Openness and transparency are integral components of academic research. To ensure openness and transparency in research, we also need to be transparent about the funding support we accept for our diverse projects and activities. In this regard, the members of CIIPC endorse and support the Open Letter on Ethical Norms in Intellectual Property Scholarship (initiated by Prof. Feldman, Prof. Lemley, Prof. Masur and Prof. Rai).
While we welcome financial and non-financial support for our diverse research activities, as a matter of principle, CIIPC does not accept any grant that comes with any conditions that may influence our research freedom or academic independence.
CIIPC has received direct or indirect financial support from different entities like UNESCO, the Department of Science and Technology – Government of Rajasthan and Qualcomm Inc. for different projects. Details regarding direct or indirect financial supports are specifically disclosed in the outputs from the projects that are externally supported.
If you would like to support the activities of CIIPC in accordance with the principles highlighted in the Open Letter on Ethical Norms in Intellectual Property Scholarship, please drop us an email at ciipc@nludelhi.ac.in.
